Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Genius in Bright Spot for Unstable Lazio

The mood at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy on Saturday afternoon. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had let in a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Coming Unstitched?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or was there ever a thread holding it together from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, only for him publicly stated that the club had not mentioned a registration embargo they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Rumours that he might quit were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.

Lazio were just as chaotic on the pitch as behind the scenes, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the rest of their first five games, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, it has been hard to ascertain if they are improving or collapsing.

The Youngster's Surprising Presence

One individual remained positive amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio this year. He was on the last one on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his parent club were advocating for him to remain there a while longer. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived in the first place under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."

Discovering His Natural Fit

Maybe Sarri was still trying to identify the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
