Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the market in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was set to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
