{'I could have killed them' - Lawson encounters near miss with Formula 1 safety personnel
Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson disclosed he barely escaped a potentially deadly collision during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when a pair of track officials crossed the track immediately ahead of his car
The dangerous situation happened on the third circuit when safety workers were seen on the circuit as Lawson was getting back on the race following an premature pit stop to swap his broken nose section
Driver's Immediate Reaction
Immediately after, Racing Bulls driver Lawson spoke to his pit wall engineer saying: "Is this for real? Could you believe what happened? I might have... taken their lives"
"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was witnessing"
"I exited on a brand new hard tyres, and then I arrived at Turn One and suddenly there were two individuals running across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, frankly, it was so dangerous"
Track Safety Questioned
"Obviously there's been a failure in communication at some point but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a active circuit marshals can be allowed to just run across the track in that manner. I have no idea why, I'm sure we'll get some sort of explanation, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Formal Inquiry in Progress
The sport's regulatory authority, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is currently investigating the events
"Subsequent to a first corner event, track officials was informed that debris was present on the track at the critical section of that bend" commented the regulatory authority
"During the third lap, marshals were alerted and put on alert to access the circuit and remove the wreckage once every vehicle had gone by"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had pitted, the instructions to dispatch officials were canceled and a caution signal was shown in that section"
"We are still investigating what happened after that point"
